  1.                 RAR - What's new in the latest version

  4.    Version 2.50
  5.  
  6.    1. Both packing speed and compression ratio have been improved.
  7.  
  8.    2. WinRAR is now able to process ZIP archives without calling
  9.       external programs.  Supported operations for ZIP archives:
  10.  
  11.       - extracting;
  12.       - testing;
  13.       - creating and updating;
  14.       - deleting;
  15.       - repairing;
  16.       - commenting;
  17.       - converting to SFX (self-extracting) archive;
  18.  
  19.       To handle ZIP archives, WinRAR incorporates compression code
  20.       by the Info-ZIP group, which is used with their permission.
  21.       There are no extra charges or costs due to the use of this code,
  22.       and the original compression sources are freely available from
  23.       ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/ 
  24.  
  25.       Note that ZIP archives are supported only by the GUI WinRAR.EXE
  26.       Console RAR.EXE and UNRAR.EXE are able to process only RAR archives.
  27.  
  28.    3. New options in "Add" dialog:
  29.  
  30.       a) "Archive format":
  31.  
  32.          Allows format selection (RAR or ZIP) of new archive.
  33.          Read online help for detailed formats consideration;
  34.  
  35.       b) "Erase destination disk contents before archiving":
  36.  
  37.          Delete all files and folders from the destination disk 
  38.          before creating an archive. Works only with removable disks
  39.          and if used when creating volumes, erasing will be performed
  40.          before the creation of each volume;
  41.  
  42.       c) "Add only files with attribute "Archive" set":
  43.  
  44.          Add only those files, which have the "Archive" attribute
  45.          set on.  Useful for backup operations;
  46.  
  47.       d) "Clear attribute "Archive" after compressing"
  48.  
  49.          Clear the "Archive" attribute on compressed files.
  50.          Useful for backup operations.
  51.  
  52.    4. Changes in "View" command:
  53.  
  54.       a) Size of viewed file in the internal viewer now is limited
  55.          only by the amount of available memory. Previous limitation
  56.          is removed;
  57.  
  58.       b) It is possible to change the default viewer font using
  59.          command "Set font" in "View" menu of viewer window.
  60.  
  61.    5. Changes in "Delete" command:
  62.  
  63.       a) Usual (non-archived) files now deleted to the Recycle Bin.
  64.          Press Shift-Del instead of Del, if you wish to delete files
  65.          as before;
  66.  
  67.       b) "Delete" command now can delete non-empty folders.
  68.  
  69.    6. New "Estimate" command allows to roughly and quickly estimate
  70.       compression ratio of selected files and folders. Do not wait
  71.       to get an exact result from this command, nevertheless it can
  72.       show is it worth to spend time to compress selected data.
  73.  
  74.    7. "Extract" and "Test" commands now are accessible also outside 
  75.       of archives. If you select a group of files and folders and use 
  76.       one of these commands, WinRAR will search for archives in the
  77.       selected data to process all archives which are found. It makes 
  78.       archive group operations much simpler.  For example, if you 
  79.       select all files and folders in a root disk folder and press 
  80.       "Test", all archives on this disk will be tested. 
  81.  
  82.    8. Changes in "Extract to" command:
  83.  
  84.       a) "Update mode" option;
  85.  
  86.       b) "Overwrite mode" option;
  87.  
  88.       c) "Clear attribute "Archive"" option;
  89.  
  90.          Clear attribute "Archive" on extracted files.
  91.          Useful for backup operations.
  92.  
  93.       d) "Keep broken files"
  94.  
  95.          Do not delete extracted files having incorrect CRC (checksum);
  96.  
  97.    9. Changes in "SFX" command: this command now allows to select the
  98.       SFX module used for archive conversion.
  99.  
  100.   10. Changes in "Info" command:
  101.  
  102.       a) RAR specific options now moved to a separate property sheet
  103.          dialog;
  104.  
  105.       b) Size of SFX module is displayed in addition to "SFX" string
  106.          in archive type.
  107.  
  108.   11. "Browse for folder" command in "File menu" allows the selection 
  109.       of a new current folder from folders tree. 
  110.  
  111.   12. "History" menu contains the names of the last opened archives. 
  112.       You may select an archive from this menu to open the archive 
  113.       again. 
  114.  
  115.   13. "Favorites" menu contains the names of the preselected 
  116.       folders and archives. You may select an item from this menu to 
  117.       open the archive or go to the folder. Use "Add to favorites" 
  118.       command (Ctrl-F) from the same menu to add a new item to the 
  119.       favorites list. 
  120.  
  121.   14. "Settings" dialog is seriously modified. Read online help
  122.       for details. Most important changes:
  123.  
  124.       - General/Interface/Reuse existing window:
  125.  
  126.         If user tries to open a new archive, executing "WinRAR 
  127.         <arcname>" command and an another WinRAR window is already 
  128.         open, the archive will be opened in the existing window. If 
  129.         this option is not enabled, a new window will be created; 
  130.  
  131.       - Paths/Start-up/Restore last working folder on start-up:
  132.  
  133.         If this option is enabled, WinRAR will set last viewed folder,
  134.         when executed without parameters;
  135.  
  136.       - Compression/Archive format:
  137.  
  138.         Select the archive format (RAR or ZIP) proposed by default
  139.         in "Add" dialog.
  140.  
  141.       - Compression/Volume options/Always put recovery record:
  142.  
  143.         Always put recovery record to volumes regardless of
  144.         "Put recovery record" option in "Add" dialog;
  145.  
  146.       - Compression/Volume options/Independent solid volumes:
  147.  
  148.         When this option is enabled, WinRAR tries to create solid 
  149.         volumes which are independent one each another, so if one 
  150.         volume is lost, files in following volumes may  still be 
  151.         accessible. Note than sometimes this option cannot help, for 
  152.         example, if volumes contain one large file. This option 
  153.         slightly decreases solid volumes compression ratio, but 
  154.         seriously increases reliability due to data loss because of 
  155.         poor media quality.  It is not recommended to switch off 
  156.         this option. 
  157.  
  158.   15. "View log" command in "Options" menu show RAR log file contents;
  159.  
  160.   16. It is now possible to integrate WinRAR to Windows shell.
  161.       If you selected "Integrate WinRAR into shell" option
  162.       when installing WinRAR, the following features are available
  163.       in Windows shell (explorer):
  164.  
  165.       a) dropping files to an archive icon will add these files
  166.          to the archive;
  167.  
  168.       b) if you drop an archive to a folder using the right mouse 
  169.          button, "Extract files" item will be added to the  menu; 
  170.  
  171.       c) "Extract files" item added to archives context menu,
  172.          which appeared after the right mouse button click on an 
  173.          archive icon;
  174.  
  175.       d) "Add to archive" item added to files and folders context
  176.          menu;
  177.  
  178.       e) Archive specific information sheet is added to archive
  179.          properties. If an archive has a comment, it is shown
  180.          as a property sheet.
  181.  
  182.   17. You may press the "Background" button in command window during 
  183.       archiving or extracting operation to minimize WinRAR to tray.
  184.       In this mode WinRAR slightly decreases its priority and continues
  185.       operation in the background. 
  186.  
  187.   18. Yellow progress bar, showing total compressed size, displayed
  188.       during archiving operation.
  189.  
  190.   19. "Drives" menu is moved from toolbar to a small icon on the 
  191.       status bar. It is also acessible using Ctrl-D shortcut.
  192.  
  193.       The second status bar icon calls "Enter default password" dialog.
  194.  
  195.   20. CRC of packed data is now stored for file parts split between 
  196.       volumes. It allows localization of a damaged volume, if volumes 
  197.       set contains one large compressed file. 
  198.  
  199.   21. New command line switches:
  200.  
  201.       a) -sv - create independent solid volumes. This switch has
  202.          the same meaning as the option "Independent solid volumes"
  203.          described above;
  204.  
  205.       b) -ac (clear "Archive" attribute) now can be used not only
  206.          when archiving, but also when extracting files to clear
  207.          "Archive" attribute on extracted files;
  208.  
  209.       c) -ap<path> - set path inside archive. It allows to add files
  210.          to a specified archive folder when archiving or to remove
  211.          the specified part of path from file names when extracting;
  212.  
  213.       d) -dh - open shared files. Enables to process files opened
  214.          by other applications for writing;
  215.  
  216.       e) -- switch stops further switches scanning. It can be useful,
  217.          if you need to use in the command line a file or archive name
  218.          beginning with '-' character.
  219.  
  220.   22. Command "CW" (write comment to file) can now be performed also 
  221.       by GUI WinRAR. In previous versions it was supported only by 
  222.       console RAR. 
  223.  
  224.   23. Significantly improved speed of processing large file lists.
  225.  
  226.   24. If in WinRAR you press Enter or double-click on an executable 
  227.       file within an archive, all archive contents will be extracted 
  228.       to a temporary folder, WinRAR will then start the selected file, 
  229.       wait until it is finished and removes this temporary folder. 
  230.       Such feature allows, for example, to install applications 
  231.       directly from archives. 
  232.  
  233.   25. DOS version of RCVT archive converter is replaced by
  234.       Win32 console version.
  235.  
  236.   26. Some unnecessary code is removed from SFX modules,
  237.       so their size was significantly reduced. For further size
  238.       decrease SFX modules were compressed using UPX tool
  239.       written by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer and Laszlo Molnar
  240.       (http://wildsau.idv.uni-linz.ac.at/mfx/upx.html).
  241.  
  242.       Uncompressed versions of SFX modules are also provided
  243.       in the archive UnpSFX.rar. They can be useful, if you want to 
  244.       modify SFX resources. 
  245.  
  246.       In Default.SFX (RAR GUI SFX) and Zip.SFX (ZIP GUI SFX)
  247.       it is possible to set some additional parameters, for example,
  248.       specify file name, which will be executed after extracting
  249.       SFX contents. Look into "Self-extracting modules" topic of
  250.       winrar.hlp for details.
  251.  
  252.   27. Comparing with the previous version some files were added to 
  253.       the distributive, some removed, so as to reduce the amount of 
  254.       unnecessary files in WinRAR folder it is a good idea to first 
  255.       uninstall any previous version and than install the new one. Do 
  256.       not forget to save your registration name and key from your 
  257.       rar.ini before doing this, if you do not have a copy of this 
  258.       information elsewhere. 
  259.  
  260.       But note that WinRAR version for Windows 3.x + Win32s
  261.       is no longer supported.  So if you need to use WinRAR under
  262.       this platform, save winrar.exe from the previous version.

  264.   28. WinRAR home page is moved to http://www.rarsoft.com
